Yelena Balashova
I was raised in Estonia in a Russian family. I earned by Masters Degree in Teaching Education from Estonia and Russia. Our family moved to the United States in 1999. Before our move, I was the principal of a Daycare-Kindergarten school for 18 years, I have worked in the ELL program for the Sioux Falls School District for 4 years. I have taught Russian language through the Ukranian Church, the Philadephia Language Center and through private lessons. I believe in Community Education because it is an affordable way for students to expand their knowledge without the cost of college. The knowledge of languages helps to understand cultures, meet new friends with the same interests, and make a connection to different countries.

Stacy Fisher

A South Dakota native, Chef Stacy, like most Midwest-raised girls, started baking when she was 9 years old. In her early 20s she married, and with the support of her new husband left the comforts of home to pursue her education at the International Culinary School at the Art Institute of Colorado in Denver.

Graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2006, Chef Stacy knew the next step was to bring her talents back to where her heart was. The eclectic food scene in Sioux Falls offered a variety of ways to use her skills as a barista, pastry chef, and baker. Her passion goes beyond the walls of any one building or kitchen. Her goal is to bring menus to life that are special to her personal clients in their own kitchens. Catering private events, teaching classes or offering one-on-one lessons, Chef Stacy can make a menu more than just what you eat, but a memory to savor.

Mary Houska

I began my career as a Paramedic in Pennsylvania. I managed an ambulance service about an hour south of Pittsburgh. I moved to Sioux Falls SD to raise a family in 1992. I continued to volunteer as a Paramedic as I raised my children. I now work full time at the Avera Heart Hospital and as a BLS/ACLS Instructor with Heartstarters. I was born third to the last into a family of 9 children and started babysitting early. I have three children ages 35,25,23 and two grandchildren ages 1 and 6. I teach many life support courses for Community Ed and have combined several classes for the Super-Sitter program. Students from the Supersitter class don't just learn to watch children, they learn to play, feed and care for children. They learn how to identify risks and prevent injury and illness and know what to do in an emergency! I enjoy teaching people of all ages to be prepared to prevent injury and illness and what they can do should if they are on the scene of a victim needing help.

We also have a dog, and our cat just had 5 adorable kittens! Besides teaching piano, I also work as a makeup artist at Sephora and enjoy helping my clients feel beautiful. In my free time, I like to be outdoors in nature, at the lake boating and fishing, and spending time with my family. I have played piano since I was 8 years old and have always loved music. As a child, learning the piano gave me confidence, helped me excel in school and express my creativity. My piano teacher was a special friend, mentor, and role model, and I enjoy providing that opportunity to other children.

Stephanie Peterson - #65217

Stephanie is a graduate of Rapid City Stevens High School and Augustana University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. She has eight years of political experience in Washington, DC where she worked on Capitol Hill for former Senator Tom Daschle.

Moving home to South Dakota in 2014 with her husband and two teenage sons has allowed Stephanie to reconnect with her roots and her passions. Last year, she founded Fruit of the Coop, LLC, a wholesale egg business, on their farm near the Big Sioux River and Brandon, South Dakota. In addition to selling eggs from her own flock of heritage chickens, she sources eggs from other small flocks within the Sioux Empire. All the chickens are pasture-raised on natural grains and forage, which gives the yolks of their eggs a deep golden color and strong shells. You can find her eggs at Cherry Rock Farm and Glory Garden (a local CSA) and served at Josiah's, Breadico and Morrie's Steakhouse. Stephanie believes in bringing local food to Sioux Falls area establishments and helping to revitalize small and mid-level agriculture in rural economies and communities. She also serves on the board for Dakota Rural Action and is active in DRA's local chapter, Homegrown Sioux Empire.

Not only do they enjoy teaching dance in the studio but they share their love for dance with community groups and charity organizations.Community Education classes give community members options they might not think of or are intimidated by for educational opportunities, making them convenient and inclusive. We think this ballroom dance class would be a perfect fit for Community Ed to make folks aware of the dance opportunities in Sioux Falls and the realization that they can participate.

Lois Running
Heidi Schrag
I was born and raised in southeastern South Dakota (Freeman), and ended up in Sioux Falls to attend Augustana College, which is where I've been ever since. Several years ago, I drove by Dakota Stained Glass and saw a sign advertising beginning stained glass classes. I signed up and fell in love with the process of copper foiled stained glass. I have taken several different classes in stained glass technique, but always seem to come back to the copper foil method. After giving friends and family a lot of stained glass sun catchers and ornaments as gifts, I've begun selling my pieces at local craft fairs and shows throughout South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska. My creations tend to be funky, unique and whimsical, definitely all one of kinds!
LandShark Scuba & Dive
I have been a certified diver for 13 years and have been teaching diving for 10 years. I developed a passion for diving almost immediately from my first experience underwater and fell in love with the wonders of the underwater world. Now I just so thoroughly enjoy sharing those wonders with others, but teaching kids is my favorite! Diving became such an important part of my life that I opened a dive ship in the upper midwest. Local diving as well as tropical are high on my list of entertainment! Watch Life with Laura and your instructor! Discover Scuba Diving with Colonel and KDLT Laura
Lyndsay Seivert

My name is Lyndsay Seivert; I am a mom, wife, full-time Registered Nurse, and Silver Leader with doTERRA Essential Oils. I have been using oils on myself and my family for over 2 years and providing education on oils for over a year. Learning about essential oils, what they are, how they work, and how to safely and properly use them can be overwhelming at first. I love to teach and educate on all the amazing benefits essential oils can provide, how to use them, when to use them, and how they work. Having a solid foundation of knowledge is vital for anyone looking to start utilizing essential oils in their everyday life, and I want to provide that foundation. Having the platform Community Education provides will give people interested in learning about natural options the opportunity to do so, and allowing me to continue to educate and enhance and empower lives with natural options.

Lynn Shattuck
Natalie Sorenson
I'm Natalie Sorenson. I've been drawn to creative play forever. I caught the jewelry bug in my mother's cellar studio and later took metallurgy in OH, where I received my degree in fashion design. The beauty of handmade jewelry comes from an artist's own signature hammer blows, torch strokes, and aesthetic, and going elemental with precious metals and soldering is the cathartic step in making so much possible. JoeBobLeigh is my label for handmade jewelry, where it has sold from Sticks & Steel to Mall of America. Some of my artistic haunts are Painted Prairie, 1st Lutheran Church, St. Mark's Church, Soul Movement Studio, the Butterfly House and Knitter's Magazine. I've taught sewing, tie-dye, painting, baton, knitting, as well as jewelry. JOE'S Garage is where I have been teaching jewelry classes to like-minded earthy artsy sorts since 2011. I have lived in Sioux Falls since 1990 with my husband, where we raised our 3 daughters.
Steve Spencer

My name is Jesse Adams and I am originally from the Bemidji area in Northern Minnesota, and moved to Sioux Falls six years ago. Up north I ran a Dojang (training gym) for nearly ten years before moving to the Sioux Falls area to support my wife's career. I feel very fortunate to be able to continue offering Kumdo/Kendo classes to the great people in our region! My training began nearly sixteen years ago, during which I have enjoyed the opportunity of traveling overseas on a number of occasions. I believe strongly in both the physical and emotional benefits of martial arts practice! The study of the sword specifically is an excellent method of pursuing a deeper understanding of ourselves while enjoying being active. I look forward to seeing you in class!
